Supports newcomers through integration services in settlement, language, employment and community connections in Kamloops and the surrounding areas.
Programs Provided by/through KIS:

The settlement and integration services: This program assists newcomers and their families through the provision of multilingual and multicultural services in order to facilitate their successful adaptation and integration processes in Canada.

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) This program provides basic, intermediate and advanced level English training to help with all practical communication needs.

ESL-Literacy Tutoring: The ESL Literacy Tutoring Program provides English language support to adult immigrant and refugee newcomers. The one-to-one tutoring is focused on social, cultural, economic and political integration into Canada. This program is free for eligible learners with flexible hours and locations.

The ESL Program provides benefits for language learners who cannot take advantage of our LINC program. It will also give the learners a more relaxed atmosphere in which to learn.

Settlement Workers In Schools (SWIS): The SWIS program is a school-based outreach program that helps newcomer students and their families adapt to and integrate into Canadian life and education during their initial years in Canada. The program assists in helping students and families adjust to education in Canada as well as integrate into the community.

Eligibility: The Settlement Workers In Schools program is open to immigrant and refugee students and their parents or caregivers (e.g. grandparents) who are currently living in the Kamloops School District 73 area.

Employment Readiness Program: Intercultural Employment Counseling Services are available at Kamloops Immigrant Services under our Employment Readiness Program. Employment Readiness services available include:
  • Resumes, cover letters and application forms
  • Job leads, hidden job market, and networking
  • Assessment of employability skills
  • Identifying/addressing employment barriers
  • Canadian workplace culture and practices
  • Job search skills and strategies
  • Canadian/local labour market information
  • Use of public computers with internet and Microsoft Office programs
  • Use of phone and email, with fax and photocopying available for a minimal paper fee
  • Tutorials and reference materials

Community Connections: Community Connections workshops, activities, and events bridge the gap between those who are new to Canada and those who are further along in their settlement process. Workshops cover:
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Parenting in Canada
  • Employment
  • Finances
  • Community services and more!
Child Minding: KIS has a child-mind program available to eligible clients, helping and supporting you and your family in order to settle and integrate into the community.

You can use our child-mind service if you are: an eligible client who is enrolled in our ELSA classes, or an eligible client who is attending a settlement appointment, workshop or event! Pre-registration is required. Activities change daily!

Translation and Interpretation: Translation & Interpretation Services are available in many different languages. Some of the many languages available are French, Punjabi, Chinese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Japanese, Spanish, and German. (and many more)

The cost for translations is determined per page, or for lengthy documents per word. Interpretation fees are charged per hour.

KIS can arrange notarizations of translations if needed at the time of translation.
