Provides trained volunteers who offer compassionate support and companionship to meet the needs of those individuals facing death and their families and support to those who are grieving.
Merritt & District Hospice Society provides support and understanding to the individual, their families, caregivers, and the bereaved. A palliative approach that focuses on comfort and support to the person and family, optimizing quality of life. Trained volunteers support the emotional and spiritual needs of individuals and their families coping with advancing and life-limiting illness.

Volunteers visit in the home, the hospital or the care facility, offering such services as bedside sitting, respite for the caregiver, companionship in the form of letter-writing, reading or other small tasks, and listening without judgement.

Merritt Hospice engages in public education for Advanced Care Planning, Serious Illness and goals of care conversations, and optimizes community supports and education surrounding bereavement and grief supports.
  • Grief Support: Volunteers are available to support individuals who are grieving, with one-to-one support for a short period of time or through the ‘Living With Loss’ support group.
  • Palliative Care Support: Volunteers provide support through visitation and companionship for individuals and families who are facing a terminal illness. Volunteers visit in the home, hospital or care facility, offering companionship, respite, and practical assistance. The focus is on making the last stages of life comfortable for both the client and their loved ones.
  • Library: Merritt Hospice has an extensive library of books, pamphlets and DVDs on palliative care, grief support and related topics.
  • Advance Care Planning: Provides planning ahead for future health and personal care.
