Family Preservation and Maternal Child Health (On Reserve)

Provides services to families with children of all ages living on reserve in Sai'kuz, Nadleh Whut'en, Stellat'en, Takla, Yekooche, Lake Babine Nation, Burns Lake Band, Wet'suwet'en, Nee Tahi Buhn, Skin Tyee, and Cheslatta.
The Family Preservation Program: Providing families from member nations who live on reserve, access to resources to ensure the safety and holistic wellness of their children are met. The goal of the program is to keep children and families together and increase the family’s ability to safely care and nurture their children. The program is co-funded by the Ministry of Child and Family Development and the First Nations Health Authority.

This program offers a variety of programs and resources on parenting, teen parenting, single parenting and mental health resources to help with everyday stresses. Each Parenting group lasts 5-8 weeks depending on the topics at hand.

  • Parent support groups
  • Parent to parent connections
  • Assisting families to plan activities that will encourage the optimum development for their children
  • Life skills/adult support groups
  • Grief/loss programs
Maternal Child Health: Provides support and information around Indigenous health care benefits prenatal and postnatal education, nutrition, breastfeeding, harm reduction, parenting, childhood growth and development, and perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety. The Maternal Child Health Program at Carrier Sekani Family Services offers resources and support to Indigenous pregnant women and parents of infants and young children from 0 to 6 years of age. Services are provided to both on and off reserve Indigenous clients.

How support can be provided:
  • Prenatal and postnatal support
  • Outreach services
  • Medical advocacy
  • Developmental assessments (home visit/clinic visits)
  • Child Wellness Clinics (in collaboration with CSFS Nursing and Early Childhood Development program.
  • Baby necessities (diapers, formula, breast pumps etc.)
  • Assistance with securing shelter
