First Nations Health Benefits / Patient Travel

Provided by Carrier Sekani Family Services

Provides transportation benefits for eligible First Nations clients to access medically required health services that are not available on reserve or in their community of residence.
The Medical Transportation program under First Nations Health Benefits assists BC First Nation clients by supplying supplementary funds for travel to medically required health services that cannot be obtained on the reserve or in the community of residence.

To access FNHB benefits, clients must:
  • Be eligible for and obtain Indian Registration (status)
  • Be a resident of BC with a valid Personal Health Number (PHN)
  • For infants, access without Indian registration is up to 24 months of age if they have one parent with an Indian registration number – after 24 months, infants must be registered and have their own Indian registration number (status)
Medical transportation coverage to access health services is available under the following criteria:
  • Travel to access medical services insured through the BC Medical Services Plan; however, providers must be registered under the MSP policy – you can register for MSP at your local Service BC office
  • Access to necessary medical specialty services not available in your community of residence – closest provider policy will be enforced by FNHA
  • Access to dental services that are not available in your community of residence – closest provider policy will be enforced by FNHA
  • Travel to FNHA funded treatment centres for substance use (formerly NNADAP)
  • Travel that does not meet the above eligibility will not be covered by the Medical Transportation Program and CSFS employees do not have the ability to overturn any of the eligibility requirements as they are enforced by FNHA.
