Youth Development/ Recreation Program - Merritt

Provides community services that enhance the health and well-being of children/youth living in the communities of Coldwater, Shackan, and Nooaitch.
Program facilitates and promotes community involvement in planning and delivering youth services.

Services include:
Cultural and traditional awareness: Provides teaching with drum making, drum sticks, drum bags, dip nets making, pow wow dance, beading, pine needle baskets, tanning hides, horsehair whips, dream catchers, bow & arrows, Storytelling, hand drumming, rattle making, soapstone carving, etc.

Group work:
  • 2BBoys Program: An 8-week program that usually runs from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Open to Coldwater, Shackan, and Nooaitch Band Members, Aboriginal youth, and community members living within one of the Villages SCHSS Services. The program is designed to assist boys ages 9 to 12 in connecting to their true selves in an empowering, respectful, healthy, and dynamic way. Also focuses on building skills to help boys excel socially and emotionally.

  • Girl Power Program: An 8-week program that usually runs from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Open to Coldwater, Shackan, and Nooaitch Band Members, Aboriginal youth, and community members living within one of the Villages SCHSS Services. This program encourages the development of strength, courage, confidence, honesty and communication skills for girls. Topics covered: self-esteem, body image, practical skills, boundaries, friendship, anger and physical fitness.

Youth Traning/Workshops:
  • Woman Self Defense classes at Merritt Civic Center.
  • Yearly Youth Trips to Vancouver “Kidz on the Skidz Street Tours and Workshops. Lee Mason facilitates these eye-opening tours of Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside, also known as” The Skids”.
  • “Learn to Fish” program put on by Monck Park.
  • Chaperone kids ages 11-18 years old to St. John Ambulance Training facility in Kamloops for “What Every Babysitter Should Know” Course.
